My Trip to the Kidney Doctor: A Bit of Good News and a Bit of Bad News

So, I had an appointment with my kidney doctor yesterday, and I thought I'd share the update with you all. It’s a mix of good and bad news, but overall, I’m feeling pretty optimistic.

Let’s start with the not-so-great part. The bad news is that my kidneys are only functioning at 45%. Yeah, I know—that’s not exactly a number you want to see when it comes to your health. It hit me a little hard at first because, let’s face it, 45% sounds like something you'd get on a test you didn’t study for. Definitely not ideal when we're talking about organs. But here’s where things take a turn for the better. The good news—and it’s actually pretty great news—is that my doctor pulled up my numbers from way back in 2017. Guess what? They’re exactly the same as they are today. That means my kidney function hasn’t gotten any worse in all these years! Considering that progressive decline is often the norm with kidney issues, this was a huge relief. The doctor basically told me, "Keep doing what you’re doing." I’m already on the right medications for my diabetes and my kidneys, and apparently, whatever lifestyle choices I’ve been making are helping to keep things stable. No new prescriptions, no drastic changes—just keep at it. So while 45% isn’t a number I’d ever aspire to, the fact that it’s holding steady is a win in my book. It’s a reminder that consistency matters. Managing chronic conditions like this can feel like a marathon, not a sprint, and right now, I’m pacing myself pretty well. Thanks for reading, and if you’re dealing with your own health stuff, hang in there. Sometimes the best news isn’t about improvement—it’s about stability. And that’s worth celebrating too.
